Anjel's Story

In a heartfelt effort to make a difference, Scott’s Automotive & Service Centers is gearing up for its second annual Brake for Breast Cancer event. This impactful fundraiser, a fusion of a 5k run and a car show, aims to rally the community behind a family courageously facing the challenges of a terminal breast cancer diagnosis.

Last year, Brake for Breast Cancer debuted with a resounding success, raising over $4,000 and fostering a sense of solidarity among the community members. Inspired by a shared commitment to their values, many within Scott’s Automotive have been touched by the impact of breast cancer, driving them to create an event that not only raises funds but also unites the community in a cause close to their hearts.

With eight locations across Colorado and Arizona, Scott’s Automotive is taking a proactive stance in the fight against breast cancer. During the entire month of October, the company pledges to donate $5 for every set of brakes installed, a compassionate initiative aimed at contributing to the cause. Partnering with vendors and suppliers such as AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, and Factory Motor Parts, Scott’s Automotive is working diligently to maximize contributions through matched donations with a goal to triple last year’s amount raised.

The heart of the event, the Brake for Breast Cancer 5k, unfolds at The Promenade Shops at Centerra in Loveland. Adjacent to the shopping center, the picturesque Chapungu Sculpture Park sets the cultural stage for this event with its Zimbabwean stone sculptures and meandering stream. Showcasing sculptures influenced by African art and a serene wetland area, the park beautifully reflects the diversity and interconnected spirit that characterizes the Loveland community.

Alexander Van Lewen, Chief Marketing Officer of Scott's Automotive, states “Unlike traditional races, the 5k is intentionally untimed, emphasizing inclusivity for everyone. Families are encouraged to participate, whether running, walking, or even rolling. The event also incorporates a car show hosted by Northern Colorado Cars and Coffee, featuring classic cars, modern vehicles, imports, and motorcycles, sure to attract the interest of car enthusiasts and attendees alike.”

The family selected as this year’s beneficiary was discovered through the support of the nonprofit partner Hope Lives. Scott’s Automotive entrusts nonprofits like Hope Lives to vet and recommend individuals genuinely in need, ensuring that their assistance reaches those facing the true challenges of battling cancer.

Anjel, a mother and wife, confronted with a rare and challenging diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer, symbolizes the diverse struggles faced by those battling cancer. Her journey involves seeking clinical trials, a costly endeavor due to lodging and travel to out-of-state locations for treatment. Her aspirations center not on a cure but on extending her time to be with her beloved family and close friends.

When asked what advice she would give to someone else who is facing a similar diagnosis, Anjel responds, “Personally, I've discovered that focusing on creating a sense of normalcy has been helpful. My husband, Rob, and I have two sons. Avan, who is nearly 15 and attends Thompson Valley High School in Loveland, and Adam, our 21-year-old who is pursuing film studies as part of the Aurora Community College system. By concentrating on aspects of daily life that feel ordinary, it brings a certain steadiness, benefiting not just me but those around me.”

Anjel goes on to say, “Stepping back from work has also made a significant difference. I was a full-time kindergarten teacher, a profession that demanded a lot. Not working now allows me to spend whatever time I have left with my family. It's a sad reality, but a true one. I did attempt to return to work after my initial treatment, but it proved to be too much. Recognizing that it was overwhelming for me, not working has made it more manageable to balance the various aspects of care. I began cancer treatment in the midst of the COVID pandemic, while both of our kiddos were online learners. This was an added stressor, so not having to work has been helpful.”

Anjel engaged in counseling for a period but found spending time with close friends more beneficial. She states, “The desire for love and closeness becomes paramount. It becomes apparent that letting go of everyday concerns allows the formation of significant bonds.”

Anjel never anticipated such a beautiful gesture from a local business when she found out she was the recipient of this fundraiser. She views themselves as an average family going through a very tough time. While it may sound materialistic, the truth is that money does make things better. Knowing that there are resources to cover various treatments is comforting. Anjel says, “I'm in the process of applying for medical trials, some of which are in Denver, but there's at least one in Rochester, at the Mayo Clinic. Having support for the travel expenses makes a significant difference for my family.”

Alexander has been a committed supporter of Anjel and says, “Anjel, we thank you for sharing your story. We are here to assist you and your family, eliminating barriers that hinder access to the care you need. We hope the funds raised will help slow the progression, improve your quality of life, and offer a sense of community. It's crucial to understand that you're not alone in this fight, and we stand in full support, hopeful for a brighter future.”

As Scott’s Automotive brings the community together for Brake for Breast Cancer, it extends an invitation to all to join in this collective effort. The event, rooted in a genuine desire to make a difference, promises a day filled with compassion, community, and a shared commitment to supporting those fighting breast cancer.
